2026 Budget: GHS 30.8bn Allocated for ‘Big Push’ Road Initiative
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will allocate GHS 30.8 billion in the 2026 budget for the Big Push road construction initiative, more than double this year’s GHS 13.8 billion allocation.
The increased funding, according to the President, underscores government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development, enhancing regional connectivity, and positioning Ghana as a leading trade and logistics hub in West Africa.
Speaking at the Wa Big Push Project sod-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, President Mahama described the initiative as a cornerstone of Ghana’s long-term development agenda, stressing that the expanded allocation will facilitate both the completion of ongoing projects and the initiation of new road networks, particularly across the northern transport corridors.
“To our contractors and engineers, let me be clear: the day of poor construction, inflated claims, and abandoned projects is over. Ghana deserves better,” the President cautioned. “You must deliver quality on schedule and within budget, and the Ghanaian taxpayer must see value in every kilometre of road we construct.”
President Mahama further assured that financing would not hinder project execution under the new framework.
“As I’ve said everywhere, this year, the Finance Minister put GHS 13.8 billion into the Big Push road construction, and next year, he’s reserving GHS 30.8 billion for the Big Push road construction. And so, payment is not going to be the problem,” he said.
He emphasized that contractors will receive prompt payments once their work meets required standards, adding that Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has guaranteed immediate settlement upon certification and inspection.
President Mahama also urged local residents to support and safeguard the project.
“To achieve success in our communities, I urge you to support the work, protect the materials, and cooperate with the engineers,” he appealed.
