  • Atlantic Lithium Falls 9.89% as GSE Turnover Rises to GH¢31.85 million

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange surged sharply on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with total turnover rising 532.47% to GH¢31.85 million from GH¢5.04 million in the previous session, driven overwhelmingly by heavy trading in MTN Ghana.

A total of 4.82 million shares changed hands during the 7,267th trading session, representing a 236.62% increase from the 1.43 million shares traded on Monday and marking a significant acceleration in liquidity at the start of the week.

MTN Ghana accounted for the bulk of the activity, with 3.79 million shares valued at GH¢26.86 million changing hands. The telecommunications stock alone represented approximately 84.32% of total market turnover, reinforcing its position as the dominant liquidity counter on the exchange.

MTN Ghana also edged higher, gaining 0.14% to close at GH¢7.10 from GH¢7.09. The stock remains close to its 2026 high of GH¢7.15, indicating continued investor interest following its strong year-to-date performance.

GCB Bank was the second-largest contributor to turnover, recording 85,325 shares valued at GH¢3.69 million, equivalent to about 11.57% of total trading value. The bank’s share price remained unchanged at GH¢43.20.

Together, MTN Ghana and GCB accounted for more than 95.00% of the entire value traded, demonstrating the highly concentrated nature of Tuesday’s market activity despite the sharp increase in headline turnover.

CAL Bank also recorded significant trading volume, with 570,072 shares worth GH¢450,542.48 changing hands. The stock closed unchanged at GH¢0.79.

Kasapreko Plc recorded 99,067 shares valued at GH¢197,074.65, but slipped 0.50% to GH¢1.99 from GH¢2.00.

Price performance across the wider market was mixed, with only two ordinary equities recording gains while several counters declined.

ZEN Petroleum Holdings Plc emerged as the strongest performer, climbing 5.00% to GH¢10.50 from GH¢10.00. The stock traded 569 shares valued at GH¢5,940.00 and closed at a new level within its 2026 trading range of GH¢5.00 to GH¢12.61.

MTN Ghana was the only other ordinary equity to record a gain. At the opposite end of the market, Atlantic Lithium suffered the steepest decline, falling 9.89% to GH¢5.74 from GH¢6.37. A total of 9,144 shares changed hands for GH¢52,489.71.

The decline pushed Atlantic Lithium to a new 2026 low of GH¢5.74, compared with a year high of GH¢8.46.

Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also weakened, declining 0.53% to GH¢1.89 from GH¢1.90 after 90,172 shares worth GH¢170,587.30 changed hands.

Enterprise Group eased 0.10% to GH¢10.03, while Guinness Ghana Breweries slipped 0.08% to GH¢11.90.

SIC Insurance fell 0.19% to GH¢5.17 from GH¢5.18, extending the correction that began in the previous session, while Kasapreko’s GH¢0.01 decline brought its closing price to GH¢1.99.

Despite the price movements, ordinary shares dominated market activity.

The main market generated GH¢31.75 million from 4.68 million shares, accounting for approximately 99.69% of total turnover.

Trading outside the ordinary equities segment remained limited. NewGold recorded just seven units valued at GH¢3,236.73, while activity on the Ghana Alternative Market was concentrated largely in Intravenous Infusions Plc.

IIL traded 130,947 shares valued at GH¢92,972.37 but closed unchanged at GH¢0.78, following the sharp decline recorded in the previous session.

HORDS also remained unchanged at GH¢0.42 after 5,482 shares changed hands for GH¢2,521.72, while Meridian Marshalls Holding Company and Digicut recorded only marginal trading.

The session contrasted sharply with Monday, when total market turnover stood at GH¢5.04 million and activity was spread more evenly across MTN Ghana, Kasapreko and Intravenous Infusions.

Tuesday’s sixfold increase in turnover therefore reflected a substantial concentration of institutional or block activity in MTN Ghana rather than a broad-based surge in trading across the market.

That distinction is important for assessing liquidity. While total turnover increased dramatically, the fact that one stock generated more than four-fifths of trading value suggests that market depth remained uneven.

The same concentration was evident in the combined contribution of MTN Ghana and GCB, which accounted for virtually all of the session’s value.

The broader price picture was also less bullish than the turnover figures might imply.

Only ZEN Petroleum and MTN Ghana recorded gains among actively traded ordinary shares, while Atlantic Lithium, Enterprise Group, ETI, Guinness Ghana, Kasapreko and SIC Insurance ended lower.

Tuesday’s session therefore presented two contrasting signals: a major increase in liquidity but continued selective selling across several counters.

For investors, the immediate focus will be whether the surge in trading can be sustained beyond MTN Ghana and whether buying interest broadens to other equities.

For now, the August 4 session underscores MTN Ghana’s outsized influence on the Ghana Stock Exchange, with the telecommunications company single-handedly transforming what would otherwise have been a relatively modest trading day into a GH¢31.85 million session.
