" \n Bawumia remains silent on e-levy during lecture on the economy \n \n\n \n With much anticipation from Ghanaians that the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will voice out his stance on the e-levy during his economic lecture, he rather remained silent. \n \n\n \n Although he did not touch on the e-levy during his speech, he made refernence to the fact that government reduced the levy from 1.75% to 1.5%, \n \n\n \n The only time the Vice President came close to mentioning the tax policy was when he was talking about taxes and levies abolished and reduced by the Akufo-Addo government within the last five years. \n \n\n \n Dr. Bawumia said the Akufo-Addo government has either reduced or abolished 18 taxes and levies and explained that they reduced the E-levy charge rate from 1.75% to 1.5%. \n \n\n \n \u201cThe introduction of an E-Levy of 1.5% on electronic financial transactions,\u201d he said. \n \n\n \n The Vice-President is on record to have opposed any taxation on Mobile Money (MoMo) transactions suggesting that such a move will impoverish the average Ghanaian. \n \n\n \n It, therefore, became a surprise to many that his government introduced the tax measure amidst huge public resistance to the policy. \n \n\n \n Ghanaians were thus looking forward to his take on the E-levy following its\u00a0controversial passage\u00a0in Parliament and expected implementation in May 2022, but their expectations were not met as the Vice President failed to make any clear comment in that regard. \n \n\n \n Read: Bawumia explains cedi\u2019s 18.2%YTD depreciation against dollar \n \n\n \n Despite concerns with the drop in the value and volume of mobile money transactions in Ghana, Dr. Bawumia maintained that Ghana has the fastest growing mobile money market in Africa. \n \n\n \n Prior to the implementation of the E-levy, data from the Bank of Ghana shows a decline in MoMo transactions and interoperability in the past few months. \n \n\n \n He insisted that Ghana is the first country to achieve a fast growing MoMo interoperability in the whole of Africa. \n \n\n \n \u201cI should note that Ghana is the first country in Africa and one of the few in the world to achieve this type of interoperability between bank accounts and mobile wallets. \n \n\n \n Achieving mobile money interoperability (MMI) in Ghana is therefore no small feat, especially at the cost ($4.5 million) we did it. The data shows that because of MMI, Ghana is the fastest growing mobile money market in Africa,\" he stated. \n \n\n \n E-levy will be a tax on electronic transactions, which includes mobile-money payments. \n \n\n \n The charge will apply to electronic transactions that are over GH\u00a2100 on a daily basis. \n "
