Court Grants GHS 70K Bail Each to Nine Democracy Hub Activists Following Illegal Mining Protest
Nine activists from the Democracy Hub, including prominent social media figure Ama Governor, have been granted bail after their arrest during protests against illegal mining activities.
Each activist was granted bail at GHS70,000, with two sureties. As part of the conditions, the individuals are required to surrender their Ghana cards to the court registry and report to the police on a weekly basis.
The ruling came following an appeal that successfully overturned a previous circuit court decision denying bail.
The activists are part of a broader group of 53 protesters facing charges ranging from unlawful assembly to assaulting a public officer and conduct likely to breach the peace.
Their arrest followed a demonstration against illegal mining, a contentious issue in Ghana, which reportedly became disorderly.
The court’s decision, despite objections from the state, has resulted in the release of Ama Governor along with eight others.
Notably, the bail denial for other high-profile activists, including Oliver Barker Vormawor and Felicity Nelson, remains under judicial review.
The case has attracted both domestic and international attention, as protests erupted across Ghana calling for the release of all detainees.
Demonstrators have been vocal about the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights, with slogans such as “Free the Protesters” and “Justice for Democracy” serving as rallying cries for action.
