" Energy Minister Commissions Technical Committee to Draft ECG Privatization Plan \r\n\r\nThe Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has inaugurated a seven-member technical committee tasked with developing a comprehensive framework for the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).\r\n\r\nThe committee, comprised of energy experts and key stakeholders, has one month to deliver a plan aimed at improving the utility provider\u2019s efficiency and service delivery.\r\n\r\nSpeaking after the inauguration, Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the government\u2019s intention is not to sell ECG outright but to involve the private sector in its operations.\r\n\r\n\u201cLet me assure the nation that we have not decided to sell ECG. Ours is to ensure that we get the private sector involved while emphasizing local participation,\u201d he stated.\r\n\r\n Stakeholder Engagement and Transparency \r\n\r\nThe Minister underscored the importance of transparency and inclusivity in the privatization process. He directed the committee to consult extensively with stakeholders, including ECG employees, unions, consumers, and other relevant parties, to ensure a comprehensive and widely accepted plan.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe want this to be done in a transparent, effective, and responsible way,\u201d Mr. Jinapor noted. \u201cThe energy sector is bleeding, and if nothing is done in the shortest possible time, it risks collapsing.\u201d\r\n\r\n Mandate of the Technical Committee \r\n\r\nThe committee\u2019s mandate includes formulating strategies to transition ECG to private sector management while prioritizing improved service delivery and operational efficiency. According to the Minister, the process will be competitive and designed to attract local and international investment to stabilize and transform Ghana\u2019s struggling energy sector.\r\n\r\nThe directive comes amid growing financial and operational challenges in the country\u2019s energy sector, with the government seeking urgent interventions to ensure its sustainability.\r\n\r\nThe committee is expected to submit its final report and recommendations by the end of February 2025."
