FIFA World Cup African qualifiers playoffs draw, which team faces Ghana?

The final ten teams for the play-off stage of Africa’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers have been decided following the last round of matches in all ten groups. 

Yesterday, Cameroon pipped Ivory Coast to a dramatic qualification as the former had led the group from matchday 1. The Indomitable completed the final ten teams to square off at the playoffs next year.

Nigeria and Algeria also secured their spots despite drawing at home to their closest challengers with Nigeria playing Cape Verde and Algeria against Burkina Faso. 

Tunisia, on the other end, beat the Chipolopolos of Zambia 3-1 to book their place.

Before Tuesday, Senegal, Egypt, Morocco, Mali, DR Congo and Ghana had already qualified to the last round.

The ten teams will be put into two pots for next month’s draw, with the pots determined by the teams’ FIFA Rankings.

The teams in Pot 1 will be seeded and drawn against the unseeded teams in Pot 2 for two-legged ties to determine the continent’s five representatives for the World Cup in Qatar next year. 

According to the latest FIFA Rankings released in October, Pot 1 will be made up of African Champions Algeria, runner ups Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia.

Pot 2 will also contain Egypt, Mali, Ghana, DR Congo, and Cameroon.

This means Ghana is likely to draw one of Algeria, Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria or Tunisia in the final round.

The draw will be held on 18th December 2021, with the specific date yet to be officially communicated by CAF.

The two-legged play-off round will take place in the next international window between March 24 and March 29, 2022.
