Ghana 2-0 Switzerland: Black Stars shine in final match before World Cup

Debut goals from Mohammed Salisu and Antoine Semenyo ensured Ghana beat Switzerland 2-0 in their final friendly before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar which commences this Sunday.

Southampton defender Salisu’s second half header and Semenyo’s half volley ensured the Black Stars travel to Qatar in high spirits after beating one of Europe’s most vibrant sides.

The Europeans started off well with Ruben Vargas coming close in the 6th minute after meeting a cross from Breel Embolo from the right but the Black Stars responded moments later after Baba Rahman sent in a through ball which was fired by Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, but did not trouble Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Just before half time Embolo missed the Swiss’ best chance after failing to score from close range.

Back from recess, Inaki Williams created Ghana’s first opportunity which was missed by Afriyie Barnieh.

Otto Addo made some super substitutions with Antoine Semenyo, Kofi Kyereh, Kamal Sowah and Kamaldeen Sulemana coming to replace Elisha Owusu, Afriyie Barnieh, Iñaki Williams and Jordan Ayew respectively.

Moments later Ghana won a corner kick which was taken by Kyereh of which Salisu rose high to head home the opener and his first goal for the Black Stars.

Antoine Semenyo doubled the lead two minutes later after a smart play from Kamaldeen Sulemana on the flanks.

Goal scorer Salisu made way for Joseph Aidoo with Alidu Seidu replacing Tariq Lamptey as the other substitutions of the game.

The Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign on November 24 against Portugal in Group H at the Stadium 974 in Doha.
