Ghana to Convert Fuel Stations into EV Charging Centers – Energy Minister
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans to convert a significant number of traditional fuel stations into electric vehicle (EV) charging centers.
Speaking at an energy policy forum on Wednesday, March 19, Jinapor stated that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to facilitate Ghana’s transition to clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
According to the minister, Ghana must begin preparing for the inevitable shift toward electric vehicles, with an expected surge in EV adoption over the next decade.
“What we are going to do is convert most of our filling stations, allocate space, and install charging stations,” Jinapor said. “With advancements in technology, you can now fully charge your car in just five to ten minutes and continue your journey.”
He further disclosed that the government is collaborating with Chinese automaker BYD to introduce new rapid-charging technology that will significantly cut charging times.
The move aligns with Ghana’s long-term energy transition agenda, which seeks to integrate sustainable solutions into the country’s transport and energy sectors.
