" In Ghana, sustainable cocoa-forest practices yield carbon credits \r\n Three years ago,\u00a0 Adwoa Akyaa \u2019s 15-acre cocoa farm was \u201cnothing to write home about,\u201d\u00a0 she says , and this may once have been true.\u00a0 While Ghana is the second-largest global producer of cocoa, average yields from individual farms remain low. \u00a0These days, however, Akyaa is among 140,000 farmers in Ghana adopting innovative practices, revitalizing their lands, and enhancing their cocoa stocks. They are not only producing more cocoa but also reducing greenhouse gas emissions \u2014and generating\u00a0 carbon credits \u00a0that are paying dividends. \r\n \u201cIt has a been a great journey,\u201d\u00a0 says\u00a0 Akyaa , whose farm is in the southern Ashanti region. She credits Ghana\u2019s program for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and enhancing carbon stocks ( REDD+ ) for helping to turn her farm around.\u00a0 \u201cWe were taught how to grow shade trees on our cocoa farms. And due to this, my cocoa trees are very healthy and strong. If you are a farmer, you need to grow shade trees because they nourish the soil, and in turn, you will get a lot of yield.\u201d \r\n Going Big on Climate-Smart Cocoa \r\n The government\u2019s program, known as GCFRP, empowers farmers to improve their cocoa plantations. They learn how to plant shade trees to reduce the heat on the ground and increase production; they also learn how to prune effectively and apply other sustainable farming techniques. The program stretches across 6 million hectares of the\u00a0 West Africa Guinean Forest . It\u2019s an area where agricultural expansion, illegal logging, and other pressures have contributed to tree and biodiversity loss and, ultimately, to global warming. \r\n The average productivity of cocoa farms in the program area has increased from 400 kg per hectare to 600 kg per hectare since 2019. Higher yields of sustainably produced cocoa beans is not only good news for farmers but also for private sector buyers with zero-deforestation supply chain commitments.\u00a0 The growing demand for sustainably sourced cocoa can expand certification processes that can fetch even better prices and more secure livelihoods for climate-smart cocoa farmers. \r\n The productivity of cocoa farms in the program area has increased from 400 kg per hectare to 600 kg per hectare since 2019. \r\n \u201cThe climate smart techniques that make cocoa farming more productive and profitable also make our forest landscapes healthier and better able to capture and sequester greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change,\u201d\u00a0 says\u00a0 Mr. John Allotey, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission .\u00a0 \u201cGhana\u2019s success is showing the world how to decarbonize a global commodity supply chain, literally, from the ground up for multiple benefits.\u201d \r\n Nana Baffour Adjei, the Krontihene (chief) of Assin-Jakai and Assin-Praso , observes that\u00a0 \"the real benefit of this program is the improvement in cocoa yields, the preservation of our forest, alternative livelihood projects that have helped to diversify income streams, and the renewed interest in sustainable cocoa farming.\" \r\n \u00a0 Training, Technology, and Integrity to Measure Success \r\n Measuring success by the amount of cocoa beans produced is easy; measuring carbon emissions reduced through sustainable farming is a far more complicated process. \u00a0Ghana\u2019s government has used technical assistance and training provided by the World Bank\u2019s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility ( FCPF ) to strengthen its systems for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2022\/07\/27\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-measurement-reporting-and-verification-mrv-of-carbon-credits\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2022\/07\/27\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-measurement-reporting-and-verification-mrv-of-carbon-credits&source=gmail&ust=1685940327467000&usg=AOvVaw3zIAr5iELbrtpqM2RMpoY5\">measuring, reporting, and verifying \u00a0emission reductions. Once verified, emission reductions can be converted into carbon credits that Ghana can use to meet its nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. \r\n Measuring success by the amount of cocoa beans produced is easy; measuring carbon emissions reduced through sustainable farming is a far more complicated process. \r\n \u00a0With trained personnel and trusted methodologies, Ghana is using a combination of remote sensing technology and ground-based sampling to monitor forest carbon dynamics. This includes gathering state-of-the-art satellite imagery and using tools such as\u00a0 Collect Earth , combined with the expert opinion of highly qualified and trained interpreters, to identify changes in forest cover. Moreover, 168 plots of the national forest inventory inside the Program area monitor and estimate emission factors. \r\n \u201cDigital technologies are helping us improve accuracy and efficiency, but we also look to local communities to support measurement, reporting, and verification of emission reductions and removals. Their intimate knowledge of the local areas helps us define land use dynamics and accurately map the extent of Ghana\u2019s forests and associated land use change,\u201d\u00a0 explains\u00a0 Ms. Roselyn Fosuah Adjei, Director Climate Change of the Forestry Commission . \r\n Ghana is also working with the World Bank\u2019s\u00a0 PROGREEN \u00a0to bring 210,000 hectares of cocoa forest landscape within Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs), an approach which empowers local communities to drive change and shape their nature-resilient futures. This support is specifically aimed at benefitting farmers \u2013 2,855 of whom to date have adopted more sustainable farming practices \u2013 and forms part of the World Bank\u2019s sustainable landscape management approach that connects nature-based investments from land to sea. \r\n REDD+ Carbon Credits Yield Payment \r\n The collective effort is paying off. In January 2023, Ghana became the second country in Africa after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2021\/10\/15\/mozambique-becomes-first-country-to-receive-emission-reductions-payments-from-forest-carbon-partnership-facility#:~:text=Maputo%2C%20October%2015%2C%202021%E2%80%94,degradation%E2%80%94commonly%20known%20as%20REDD%2B\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2021\/10\/15\/mozambique-becomes-first-country-to-receive-emission-reductions-payments-from-forest-carbon-partnership-facility%23:~:text%3DMaputo%252C%2520October%252015%252C%25202021%25E2%2580%2594,degradation%25E2%2580%2594commonly%2520known%2520as%2520REDD%252B&source=gmail&ust=1685940327468000&usg=AOvVaw1PcyycJpoljiFhgdQ2_w-b\">Mozambique \u00a0to receive payments from the FCPF for reducing emissions through REDD+. FCPF paid Ghana $4.8 million for reducing some 972,000 tons of carbon emissions during\u00a0 the first monitoring period \u00a0(June to December 2019) of their emissions reduction payment agreement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2019\/07\/09\/ghana-signs-landmark-deal-with-world-bank-to-cut-carbon-emissions-and-reduce-deforestation\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2019\/07\/09\/ghana-signs-landmark-deal-with-world-bank-to-cut-carbon-emissions-and-reduce-deforestation&source=gmail&ust=1685940327468000&usg=AOvVaw2OszZuO_41uYw7JdiMBbX_\">ERPA ). It specifies that the FCPF will pay up to $50 million for 10 million tons of carbon emissions that Ghana reduces through 2024. \r\n The bulk of these payments (69%) will go to farmer groups and local communities like Akyaa\u2019s that are achieving results. These communities have created shaded cocoa systems and are ultimately responsible for halting the expansion of cocoa and food crop farms into forest reserves. They have also helped to reduce illegal logging, illegal mining, and wildfires. \r\n FCPF paid Ghana $4.8 million for reducing some 972,000 tons of carbon emissions during \u00a0 the first monitoring period \u00a0 (June to December 2019) of their emissions reduction payment agreement (ERPA). \r\n \u00a0A\u00a0 benefit sharing plan \u00a0ensures farmers and other stakeholders are fairly recognized and rewarded for their crucial role in reducing emissions. An additional program supported by the World Bank\u2019s new\u00a0 EnABLE \u00a0trust fund is further promoting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2023\/02\/07\/what-you-need-to-know-about-social-inclusion-in-results-based-climate-finance\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2023\/02\/07\/what-you-need-to-know-about-social-inclusion-in-results-based-climate-finance&source=gmail&ust=1685940327468000&usg=AOvVaw2dkCg0zGlnxzWwIXF90x7M\">social inclusion \u00a0of marginalized communities and disadvantaged groups, such as women, youth, and people with disabilities. \r\n Today, Ghana is establishing a track record of generating and transacting REDD+ carbon credits at the jurisdictional level. \u00a0If the country continues to generate high-quality emission reductions at its current rate, up to 10 million additional emission reductions could be available for sale through carbon markets. The FCPF program supports Ghana to build credibility and experience to transact through carbon markets and gain access to other sources of climate finance. \r\n \u201cGhana\u2019s rigorous REDD+ process signals to carbon markets that the country is producing high-integrity, high-quality carbon credits,\u201d\u00a0 says\u00a0 Andres Espejo, FCPF Fund Manager .\u00a0 \u201cAs Ghana and countries with similar programs begin to monetize emission reductions through carbon markets, these multiple income streams and finance will benefit the farming communities at the forefront of forest conservation work.\u201d \r\n \u00a0 The Forestry Commission of Ghana is partnering with the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility, Ghana Forest Investment Program, Global Environment Facility, PROGREEN, REDD+, and the World Bank to support climate and forest-smart development in Ghana. The World Bank is drawing on this experience as it rolls out its new Scaling Climate Action by Lowering Emissions ( SCALE ) trust fund to deploy results-based payments in support of just and inclusive decarbonization across a broad range of sectors.
