Hearts, Kotoko miss out as no Ghanaian club makes IFFHS top 20 ranked clubs in Africa

Defending champions of the GPL, Accra Hearts of Oak and current league leaders Kumasi Asante Kotoko have failed to make the top 20 club rankings in Africa put up by IFFHS.

The two most successful Ghanaian clubs in CAF Interclub competitions and the rest of the clubs in the country have struggled to make an impact in Africa since Hearts won the inaugural CAF Confederation Cup in 2004, beating eternal rivals Asante Kotoko in a two legged tie.

In a list released by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, Egyptian giants Al Ahly sit top on as North African teams dominate the rankings.

South African sides Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates also make the list with Nigeria’s Rivers United the only club representing West Africa.

The biggest climbers on the latest ranking is Morocco’s Raja Casablanca who moved from 10th to 2nd within the week.

The surprise package in the list is Angola’s CD Sagrada Esparanca, joining compatriots Atletico Petro de Luanda.
