Digital Equity Crucial for a Prosperous Future – Communication Minister
The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has called for a global effort to close the digital divide, emphasizing that digital equity was crucial for a prosperous future.
Speaking at the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) in New Delhi on Tuesday, she stressed the need for affordable, accessible internet and digital literacy, especially for marginalized and rural communities.
According to the Minister, bridging the gap requires substantial investment in digital skills training and fostering inclusivity within the tech industry.
“This vision includes investing in digital skills training and promoting inclusivity in the tech industry to foster innovation that reflects diverse perspectives,” she said.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful stated that her vision for leveraging these technologies begins with harnessing data and digital infrastructure and developing digital ecosystems to improve climate modelling and predictive analytics.
“Ghana can optimise energy consumption through IoTs and smart technologies, significantly reducing our carbon footprint and fostering a sustainable future,” she added.
On healthcare, she said the merging of AI, telemedicine and blockchain technology can revolutionize patient care medical records management.
Ghana’s active participation in the WTSA, she said, was a testament to the country’s dedication to technological advancement.
“By contributing to global ICT standards, Ghana positions itself for enhanced digital infrastructure, increased innovation and global competitiveness,” the Minister stated.
This involvement, she emphasized, sets the stage for a more connected, innovative and inclusive future where sectors like healthcare, education and financial inclusion will see marked improvements.
