WAFCON 2024: Ghana’s Black Queens Gear Up for Opener Against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana

The Black Queens of Ghana are set to kick off their TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign against reigning champions South Africa on Monday, July 7, 2025. After missing the 2022 tournament, Ghana returns with high hopes and a determination to reclaim their status as a powerhouse in African women’s football.

Under the guidance of head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, the Black Queens are focused on executing their game plan, embracing their underdog status while expressing confidence in their ability to compete. “If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team,” Björkegren stated during a press conference.

Ghana’s squad combines physical resilience with fresh tactical direction, having shown promising form in recent friendlies, including victories over Malawi and Benin. Despite a setback against Nigeria, where they lost 3-1, the Black Queens are eager to make their mark in the tournament.

Historically, Ghana has faced South Africa five times, winning once while South Africa has claimed victory four times. Their last encounter was in 2016, where Ghana triumphed 1-0 to secure third place in the tournament.

South Africa, ranked 54th in the world, comes into the match unbeaten in their last seven games, showcasing a formidable defense that has averaged only 0.6 goals conceded per game. Key players for the Banyana Banyana include Refiloe Jane, Linda Motlhalo, and Jermaine Seoposenwe.

Ghana, currently ranked 66th globally, navigated a smooth qualification process but has displayed mixed form recently, with three wins, two losses, and one draw in their last six outings. However, they have managed to score an impressive average of 3.2 goals in their last five matches, with standout performances from players like Princess Marfo, Portia Boakye, and Evelyn Badu.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Findiib addressed the media, expressing confidence despite the underdog label. “We are very happy to be here. It’s a great opportunity given to us, and we are trying to showcase ourselves,” she said. Findiib emphasized the importance of treating each match individually, stating, “Whatever the outcome, we take it game by game.”

The match is set to kick off at 16:00 GMT at Honneur Stadium in Oudja.
