" \n World Bank Country Director expresses confidence in Ghana's economy \n \n\n \n World Bank Country Director, Pierre Laporte, has expressed confidence in the Ghanaian economy. \n \n\n \n The World Bank Country Director's expression of confidence in the Ghanaian economy is based on his believe that the country holds a huge potential to become a leader of effective development on the African Continent. \n \n\n \n Speaking at the launch of a $10m tourism grant for SMEs in Accra, Mr Laporte, further averred that despite the country\u2019s current economic challenges, President Akufo-Addo\u2019s government is able to turn around the country's economic misfortunes. \n \n\n \n \u201cIn the World Bank, we have a target to try to disburse at least 20% of our portfolio during a single year. This year we did close to 23% above our target. A World Bank support to Ghana at this level is testimony to the belief we have in this country. We believe strongly that Ghana holds huge potential to get to effective development in Africa.\u201d \n \n\n \n \u201cDespite the current micro fiscal challenges, we are confident that Ghana will rise through it\u2026. but we have full confidence in the leadership of President Akufo-Addo. Ghana will turn the economy around,\u201d he remarked. \n \n\n \n Mr Laporte's assertion comes at a time when the Akufo-Addo-led government is seeking a Balance of Payment (BoP) Support Programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) amid debt challenges, rising fiscal deficit, declining gross reserves, loss of market access to international capital markets, among others. \n \n\n \n President Nana Akufo-Addo on Wednesday launched a $10 million Tourism Grant to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to transform the tourism sector and stimulate economic growth. \n \n\n \n The Grant is being provided by the International Development Association of the World Bank Group to support government\u2019s Tourism Development Project, an initiative to improve tourism performance, upgrade tourism sites and capacities of players in the sector and increase tourism revenues. \n \n\n \n The grant will revitalize the tourism sector which has been heavily hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some 1,500 SMEs are expected to benefit from the arrangement, which will target mostly women who are majority of the operators in the sector. \n \n\n \n Speaking at the launch of the Grant in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said the disbursement of the Grant is in line with the government\u2019s efforts to support SMEs in the Tourism and Arts value chain to recover quickly from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and help create jobs for the people. \n \n\n \n He noted that the hospitality and creative arts sectors were a significant part of the national economy adversely affected by the pandemic, resulting in a 75 percent decline in international tourism arrivals in 2020 and a 45 percent reduction in 2021. \n \n\n \n Thus, it was imperative that the requisite support is offered to the sector to drive recovery. \n \n\n \n The President said that the government\u2019s comprehensive handling of the pandemic and the introduction of tourism-specific measures was enabling the rebound of the sector. \n \n\n \n The Government, he said, was committed to building a conducive business environment that enhances entrepreneurship to drive economic activity and transform the fortunes of the country. \n \n\n \n \u201cGovernment remains committed to ensure that the private sector is able to function effectively by building an ecosystem that creates opportunities for businesses to grow and create jobs for the youth,\u201d he said. \n \n\n \n President Akufo-Addo charged players in the tourism, hospitality, and creative arts sectors to institute good corporate governance practices in their businesses to attract investors. \n \n\n \n \u201cEven though Ghana can boost of several well-round companies that have demonstrated commitment to good corporate governance, poor corporate governance has been sighted as the major factor that has led to the collapse of many businesses in the country\u201d. \n \n\n \n \u201cAs Ghanaian companies compete globally to attract foreign investment partnerships, they must be guided by the fact that investors are prepared to pay a premium for shares in a well-governed company. \n \n\n \n \u201cThe onus is thus on business owners to position their businesses properly for foreign investment by ensuring that they implement and practice good corporate governance,\u201d he advised. \n \n\n \n The President commended the World Bank for supporting the Ghana Tourism Development project. \n \n\n \n \u201cWe continue to value the partnership of the World Bank in our development journey,\u201c he said. \n \n\n \n The Country Director of the World Bank, Pierre Laporte said the funding for the tourism development project by the institution was a sign of growing relations between Ghana and the World Bank. \n \n\n \n He said the project was a perfect vehicle through which Ghana can grow its economy in the face of the global recession and charged grant recipients to apply the funds wisely. \n \n\n \n \n "
