MoMo Transactions Hit Record GH¢518.4bn in December 2025
Mobile money (MoMo) transactions in Ghana surged to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, reinforcing the growing dominance of digital payments in the country’s financial system, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana.
The December outturn represents the highest monthly transaction value recorded in 2025, reflecting heightened consumer activity during the festive season alongside the continued expansion of mobile money usage nationwide.
Transaction volumes rose to 982 million in December, up from 892 million in November, pointing to increased spending levels and broader adoption of digital payment platforms.
The number of active mobile money accounts also increased significantly to 26.7 million in December, from 25.5 million a month earlier. Registered accounts climbed to 80.5 million, underscoring ongoing gains in financial inclusion.
Supporting this growth was a further expansion in the mobile money agent network, with 491,000 active agents recorded at the end of December.
Balances held in mobile money wallets reached GH¢39.6 billion, the highest level for the year, suggesting improved liquidity in the digital payments ecosystem and growing confidence in mobile wallets as a store of value.
Interoperable mobile money transactions strengthened during the month, with transaction values rising to GH¢5.8 billion from GH¢4.9 billion in November, largely driven by increased cross-network transfers over the holiday period.
In contrast, traditional payment instruments continued to account for a smaller share of transactions. Cheque payments totalled GH¢37.3 billion in December, well below mobile money values, while electronic payment platforms such as GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transaction value during the month.
Overall, the data confirms mobile money’s role as the backbone of Ghana’s retail payments system, with seasonal spending patterns, rising smartphone penetration and the continued expansion of the agent network expected to sustain growth into 2026.
