South Africa Retains Continental Athletics Title at CAA Championships in Nigeria

South Africa has once again established its dominance in athletics by retaining the crown at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Under-18 and Under-20 Championships, which concluded on Sunday in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

The South African team, known as Team SA, showcased exceptional talent and determination throughout the competition. They have now solidified their status as the African champions and are returning home in two groups, with the first group departing Lagos on Monday and arriving at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The second group is scheduled to leave Nigeria this afternoon, landing in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

While South Africa celebrated its success, the final medals count and results are still pending due to technical issues faced by the event organizers. The results management system, operated by Timetronics, reportedly experienced multiple crashes, leading to inconsistencies during the championships. The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) is expected to officially declare the final statistics before they are made public.

James Moloi, President of Athletics South Africa, expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “Welcome back to our heroes and heroines. This has been one team, with one dream and one incredible solid victory! Teamwork makes the dream work, and today we are living proof. Our ongoing dominance of this championship tells the story of the rooted character of our South African athletes.”

Moloi further commended the collective effort of the athletes, coaches, team management, and parents for their resilience and focus on the ultimate goal of winning the African crown. “This was the true South African spirit, which we believe will continue to inspire each athlete as they grow and pursue their respective future careers,” he added.
