MoFA denies Pork import deal; no agreement signed with US it says

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in Ghana has issued a statement denying recent reports of a deal for the importation of large quantities of pork from the United States.

The Ministry stated that the Veterinary Services Directorate (VSD) of the Ministry had only requested certification for meat and poultry healthiness from veterinary medical officers in the USA for exports to Ghana.

According to the statement, the Ministry categorically denies the validity of the reports and emphasized that no agreement has been signed between the Ministry and any party for the importation of pork.

The statement added that the mandate of the VSD has been misconstrued and that the Ministry is obligated to render the requested services professionally in accordance with the ethics of the Organization of World Animal Health, of which Ghana is a member.

MoFA also reassured the public that it will not undermine the efforts of the Ghanaian pig farmer and will not flood the market with imported pork.

The statement aims to clarify the role of the Ministry and the VSD in the process of certification for meat and poultry exports to Ghana and refute the allegations of a deal for the importation of pork.
