Prof John Gatsi commends John Mahama’s engagement with the media on national issues

Professor John Gatsi, Dean of the School of Business at the University of Cape Coast, has lauded the leadership qualities demonstrated by John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during a media engagement on July 7, 2024.

In a Facebook post on July 8, Prof. Gatsi highlighted Mr Mahama’s adept handling of questions from seasoned journalists, commending his clarity and honesty as essential traits for the presidency.

Mr Mahama’s discourse on the 24-hour economy was particularly praised by Prof Gatsi as the former president articulated a compelling vision for how extending operational hours could stimulate production and distribution, fostering robust economic growth.

This policy proposal aligns with broader strategies to mitigate exchange rate volatility and reduce reliance on imports, positioning Ghana for accelerated industrialisation.

On governance and social equity, the former president’s responses were met with high approval. He addressed issues pertaining to the youth and vulnerable populations, advocating for comprehensive social interventions and stringent anti-corruption measures.

Prof. Gatsi noted that Mr Mahama’s commitment to economic restructuring was evident, reflecting a nuanced understanding of Ghana’s socio-economic challenges.

A standout proposal was the National Women Bank, aimed at supporting female entrepreneurs. Prof. Gatsi underscored this initiative as a testament to Mr Mahama’s dedication to enhancing financial access and inclusion. By offering a sustainable model for job creation, the bank promises to significantly impact women’s economic empowerment.

In the realm of education, the flagbearer of the NDC reaffirmed the permanence of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, while calling for improved implementation. His emphasis on agriculture as the foundation of Ghana’s economy was lauded as a strategic vision for long-term economic stability and growth.

Prof. Gatsi concluded that the flagbearer’s engagement was conducted with maturity, poise, and a hopeful outlook, epitomizing exemplary leadership. This engagement, he argued, sets a high standard for political discourse in Ghana, underscoring the need for clear, honest, and forward-thinking leadership.

Clarity of thought and honesty of expression are two important leadership qualities needed now for the Ghanaian presidency.
These characterize the 3-hour engagement with journalists yesterday. The 24-hour economy, governance, the youth and the vulnerable in society all pass the test with excellence.
About social intervention, fighting corruption and resetting the economy all pass with distinction
Genuineness in the discussion is clear. The proposed National Women Bank is a demonstration of commitment to financing women entrepreneurs with a different model to ensure sustainability and job creation. This will expand financial access and inclusion.
The clarity on Free SHS that it has come to stay but needs improvement in the implementation is good. Treating agriculture as the foundation of our economy and the future of the economy is great.
The engagement was done with maturity, acceptable body language and hope.
