UCL: Guardiola Clarifies Self-Harm Comment After Feyenoord Draw

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has clarified comments made after Tuesday’s 3-3 Champions League draw with Feyenoord, stating he did not intend to make light of self-harm.

City squandered a 3-0 lead at the Etihad, extending their winless run to six games. During his post-match press conference, Guardiola was seen with scratches on his forehead.

When asked about a mark on his nose, he mimicked scratching and said, “With my finger, my nail.” He then added, “I want to harm myself,” before laughing and exiting the conference.

Following criticism, Guardiola issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. “I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this,” he wrote. “My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.”

Acknowledging the struggles many face with mental health, Guardiola highlighted the work of the Samaritans charity as a resource for those needing support.

City remain second in the Premier League, eight points behind Liverpool, whom they face on Sunday at Anfield.
