Family of Ken Ofori-Atta Accuses OSP of “Vendetta” Over INTERPOL Red Notice
The family of embattled former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has issued a scathing rebuke of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), accusing it of orchestrating a “premeditated vendetta” against the former official through the abuse of legal procedures and international law.
In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, June 9, the family described the OSP’s issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice against Mr. Ofori-Atta as a violation of due process, constitutional rights, and INTERPOL’s own protocols. They contend that the notice was obtained based on “manipulated evidence” and the deliberate concealment of critical medical documentation.
Petition to INTERPOL, Legal Pushback
The family revealed that they have petitioned the National Central Bureau and the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF), calling for the immediate removal of the Red Notice. According to them, the arrest warrant secured by the OSP on February 11, 2025, for alleged offences of “using public office for private profit,” was granted under irregular circumstances and lacked a supporting affidavit.
They also criticised the OSP’s public declaration of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive from justice—announced first via a media briefing—as legally baseless and currently under challenge at the Human Rights Court. A ruling on the matter is expected on June 18.
Medical Treatment, Not Evasion
The family maintains that Mr. Ofori-Atta, who is undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in the United States for a cancer diagnosis made earlier this year, had offered to cooperate via a video-recorded interview due to his medical condition. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on June 13, 2025.
“Rather than respecting the medical records shared and permitting a virtual engagement as permitted under law, the OSP chose to portray a man scheduled for surgery as a fugitive,” the statement said.
They further accused the OSP of concealing relevant medical information from INTERPOL and ignoring all efforts by the former Finance Minister to cooperate remotely.
OSP’s Conduct Under Scrutiny
The family announced that a new lawsuit filed on June 3 seeks to invalidate the arrest warrant and expose procedural violations by the OSP. They are questioning whether the OSP disclosed to INTERPOL the ongoing legal challenge, medical records, and the cancer diagnosis when applying for the Red Notice.
“Had these been disclosed, the INTERPOL filing would have contravened Articles 2 and 3 of its constitution, which prohibit political abuse and guarantee the right to health,” the family argued.
Political Spectacle, Not Legal Accountability
Reiterating their stance, the family insisted that the OSP’s actions are politically motivated and amount to “a public lynching,” rather than a lawful pursuit of justice.
“Mr. Ofori-Atta has never fled from accountability. He stood firm before CHRAJ, Parliament, and ECOWAS Court inquiries—and was cleared each time,” they noted, adding that the current developments represent “vengeance, not justice.”
They assured the public that Mr. Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana once his treatment is complete and face any legitimate legal processes.
INTERPOL Listing
Meanwhile, INTERPOL has officially listed Ken Ofori-Atta as “Wanted” on its public platform, following the OSP’s renewed declaration after he failed to appear for questioning on June 2.
He is under investigation for his alleged involvement in several high-profile matters, including:
Petroleum and Minerals Revenue Assurance – involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the GRA;
Electricity Company Contract Termination – pertaining to a terminated deal with Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC);
National Cathedral Project – over procurement irregularities and financial transactions;
Ambulance Procurement Deal – concerning a 307-ambulance contract awarded by the Ministry of Health to Service Ghana Auto Group Ltd.;
GRA Tax P-Fund Management – relating to the handling and disbursement of funds in the GRA’s P-Fund account.
The OSP has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations raised by the family.
