Messi Shines as Inter Miami Stuns FC Porto with 2-1 Comeback Victory

In a thrilling encounter at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, Lionel Messi delivered a stunning performance, scoring a trademark free-kick to lead Inter Miami to a remarkable 2-1 comeback victory over FC Porto on Thursday.

The match, held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, saw Inter Miami earn their first-ever win at the Club World Cup, significantly boosting their chances of progressing from Group A. Both Inter Miami and Palmeiras now sit on four points, while Porto remains at one point alongside Al Ahly.

Porto started strong, with Samu Aghehowa converting an early penalty awarded after a VAR review. Miami defender Noah Allen made minimal contact with Joao Mario in the box, but it was enough for the referee to point to the spot. Aghehowa’s low shot found the net despite Oscar Ustari getting a hand to it.

The Portuguese side dominated the first half, creating several chances and nearly doubling their lead. Inter Miami struggled to find their rhythm, with veteran striker Luis Suarez narrowly missing a chance after being set up by Messi.

The tide turned at the start of the second half when Telasco Segovia blasted home Marcelo Weigandt’s cut-back, leveling the score at 1-1. The equalizer energized the home crowd, which grew throughout the match, ultimately reaching nearly 32,000 spectators.

Messi then took center stage, as he was fouled just outside the box. The Argentine superstar dusted himself off and curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner, giving Miami a 2-1 lead just nine minutes into the second half.

With the lead secured, Inter Miami’s defense held firm against Porto’s attempts to equalize. Javier Mascherano’s side demonstrated remarkable resilience, blocking shots and clearing danger as the game approached its conclusion. Seven minutes of stoppage time added to the tension, but Miami’s players threw themselves in front of every shot, embodying the spirit of their head coach.

As the final whistle blew, the stadium erupted in celebration, marking a historic moment for an MLS team against European opposition. This victory not only highlights Messi’s enduring brilliance but also signifies a turning point for Inter Miami, co-owned by former England international David Beckham.
