GFA President Kurt Okraku Engages Match Commissioners on Enhanced Safety Protocols
In a significant move to bolster safety in Ghanaian football, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku met with Premier League Match Commissioners on February 18, 2025, to discuss enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols.
This initiative aims to ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators amid growing concerns regarding matchday incidents.
During the training session held at the GFA Headquarters, President Okraku emphasized the importance of integrity and honesty in the referees’ duties, stating, “Espousing the sublime qualities of truthfulness and honesty will prove crucial in improving the game.”
He assured the commissioners that their performance would be fairly assessed, urging them to be vigilant and proactive in their roles.
Okraku acknowledged the urgent need for change within the Ghanaian Premier League, particularly following recent incidents that have raised alarm among fans and stakeholders.
“The clarion call from Ghanaians is that something has to change,” he remarked. “And if it is that we have the opportunity to cure what is seen not to be well, this is the most opportune time.”
The discussion also addressed the unfortunate events that occurred in Nsoatre, which have served as a catalyst for revising matchday protocols. Okraku stressed the necessity of protecting match officials and educating fans about maintaining a safe environment during games.
“We occupy a special place in our sports. We play a very important role in the management of our game,” he noted.
The GFA President urged the commissioners to actively enforce the new safety protocols and collaborate with local security agencies to identify and address potential threats before, during, and after matches.
He expressed confidence in their ability to deliver football safely and effectively, stating, “I have absolute trust in the group that we have here. I know that we have the capacity to deliver football in the way it has to be delivered.”
