2021 Africa Cup of Nations: How much will the winner get in prize money?

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will kick-off today as a record number of global broadcasters prepare to beam Africa’s largest sporting event and the world’s third-largest football competition after the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship from Cameroon to millions of fans in 157 countries.

Though prize money is generally thought to impact only clubs around the world, a total of $1.850 million was added to the prize money from the quarter-final stage to the final for this year’s edition.

Not only that, but the new prize money for eventual champions of the competition is $5 million – a $500,000 increase from the previous prize in the 2019 edition.

Plus, the further a nation goes in the tournament, the more money they will automatically receive, so it is within their best interests to progress through the rounds not just for success on the pitch but also for increased financial stability.

How much will teams receive for the quarter-final?

Each of the eight teams who qualify for the quarter-final of the tournament will receive USD 1.175 million (an increase of USD 175,000 from the previous prize in the 2019 edition).

How much will teams receive for the semi-final?

Each of the four teams who qualify for the semi-final of the tournament will receive USD 2.2 million (an increase of USD 200,000).”

What is the prize money for winning Euro 2020?

The winners of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will receive a prize of $5 million, while the runners-up will receive a reward of $2.5 million.

Where does that money come from?

Sponsors are essential, and for the 33rd edition of AFCON, TotalEnergies is the title sponsor of the tournament as part of its eight-year partnership agreement with the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF).

Although CAF does not reveal details of individual sponsorship packages, the expectation is that the revenue generated from brands wishing to be associated with Africa’s top players will generate over US$35 million in revenue for Africa’s governing football.
