2022/23 GPL final day: Medeama and Bechem title tug of war, Hearts of Oak’s relegation threat

2022/23 GPL final day: Medeama and Bechem title tug of war, Hearts of Oak’s relegation threat

There’s a lot to fight for on the final day of the Ghana Premier League season, with the title still in the balance. Medeama and Bechem United are both within a touching distance of lifting a first-ever Premier League title.

Medeama sit top of the table knowing that even a draw will be enough to spark celebrations. Three points separate the Mauve and Yellows from second-placed Bechem United, and as their nickname suggests they understand very well, the hunt is on.

A draw will not be enough for the Hunters, only three points and fluffiness from Medeama will hand Bechem the title. They go away to two-time champions, Aduana.

Medeama host Tamale City, who face relegation in the face, just like Hearts of Oak.

Three points separate the 21-time league champions from returning to the hustle of Division One football.

The Phobians have lost their last four league games and if they lose to Berekum Chelsea, they will be playing Zone Three Division One football next season after 6pm on Sunday if Great Olympics, Tamale City, Legon Cites, Karela United and Accra Lions pick up wins.

It sets up a very tasty final day as the five clubs (Olympics, Tamale City, Legon Cities, Karela United and Accra Lions) are also in need of victories to escape relegation.

Olympics are 16th and take on Nsoatreman. Legon Cities sit 14th and come up against Samartex.

Lothar Matthaus’ Accra Lions, are just two-points above the drop zone in 13th – victory over Bibiani GoldStars will secure their top flight status for next season, while Karela, right below Hearts in 12th, take on already relegated Kotoku Royals.

Meaning Hearts, who took a 1-0 lead in their penultimate game before surrendering to a 2-1 RTU defeat, cannot afford similar slip ups on Sunday.

“I signed a contract to win the league with Accra Hearts of Oak. But things are not going how they are supposed to go – and you can witness it. It doesn’t mean the players are bad, but we have to do extra,” Samuel Inkoom said to Citi Sports.

Two relegation spots have already been snapped up, with Kotoku Royals and King Faisal heading back to Division One.
