2022 World Cup: Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani named in Uruguay squad
One of Ghana’s group opponents at the World Cup, Uruguay have released their 26 man squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Veterans Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin are set to play at their fourth consecutive Fifa World Cup after being named in the squad.
Uruguay will be depending a lot on in-form star Federico Valverde who is at the peak of his career with Real Madrid after scoring 8 goals and making 4 assists for the Los Blancos in all competitions this season.
Three Premier League players have been selected by the South American side, who won two of the first four World Cup titles. Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur of Tottenham and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri are all in.
Key defender Ronald Araujo of Barcelona has been picked despite having thigh surgery in September.
Ghana will be looking to avenge their painful quarterfinal exit to Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where they lost on penalties after Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty that would have seen the Black Stars become the first African side to make it to the semifinals of the World Cup.
Uruguay will open their World Cup campaign against South Korea as Ghana take on Portugal in the other group game on November 24.
