  • 2026 FIFA World Cup: England v Argentina Preview

The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final reaches a dramatic climax on Wednesday when England and Argentina reignite one of football’s greatest rivalries in a blockbuster semi-final at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

More than just a place in Sunday’s final against Spain is at stake. The clash revives a rivalry that has been dormant for more than 20 years but remains one of the most emotionally charged fixtures in international football, shaped by iconic World Cup battles, unforgettable controversies and decades of history.

England head into the encounter hoping to reach their first FIFA World Cup final since lifting the trophy on home soil in 1966.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have endured a difficult route to the last four despite winning all their knockout matches. They edged past DR Congo after recovering from an early setback, survived a tense contest against Mexico despite playing with 10 men for much of the second half, and eventually defeated Norway after extra time in the quarter-finals.

The Three Lions have now reached four major tournament semi-finals since 2018, matching the total they managed throughout the rest of their football history.

England arrive on the back of four consecutive victories, scoring at least two goals in each match. However, defensive lapses remain a concern, something Tuchel himself admitted after the victory over Norway.

A place in Sunday’s final would end a 60-year wait and offer England the opportunity to compete for a second World Cup crown.

Standing in England’s way are defending champions Argentina, who are seeking a second successive World Cup final and a fourth world title overall.

Lionel Scaloni’s side have once again demonstrated the resilience that carried them to glory in Qatar four years ago. They have survived three demanding knockout matches, overcoming Cape Verde, staging a remarkable comeback against Egypt before edging Switzerland after extra time.

The South Americans have now won 13 consecutive matches since September last year and have scored an impressive 17 goals at this World Cup—just one shy of their highest-ever tally at a single edition of the tournament.

Scaloni could become only the seventh coach in history to lead a nation to two World Cup finals if Argentina prevail in Atlanta.

Although England and Argentina have not met since a 3-2 England friendly victory in November 2005, their meetings on football’s biggest stage have become part of World Cup folklore.

England eliminated Argentina on their way to winning the 1966 World Cup before one of football’s most famous matches unfolded in the quarter-finals of Mexico 1986.

That encounter produced Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal before the Argentine captain scored what many still regard as the greatest goal in World Cup history, leading Argentina to a 2-1 victory.

Twelve years later, another classic followed in France. Michael Owen’s stunning solo goal and David Beckham’s red card dominated a dramatic round-of-16 encounter that Argentina eventually won on penalties.

England finally earned revenge at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea when Beckham converted the decisive penalty in a tense 1-0 victory.

Wednesday’s showdown marks the first World Cup meeting between the nations in nearly a quarter of a century and their first encounter of any kind in more than two decades.

While political and historical tensions surrounding the Falklands (Malvinas) conflict have often formed part of the backdrop to previous meetings, both camps have insisted the focus remains purely on football.

Scaloni has described the match as “just a football game,” while England are determined to ensure emotions do not distract them from the opportunity before them.

Yet for supporters on both sides, memories of Maradona, Beckham, Owen and other unforgettable World Cup moments ensure this fixture carries significance far beyond a normal semi-final.

England are expected to continue with Tuchel’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system built around disciplined pressing, quick transitions and attacking width.

The return of Declan Rice after illness is a major boost for the Three Lions, while Jude Bellingham arrives in sensational form after scoring twice in successive knockout matches. Harry Kane, meanwhile, is expected to make his 121st England appearance, moving past Wayne Rooney as the country’s most-capped outfield player.

Argentina are likely to stick with their familiar system centred around Lionel Messi’s creativity and the relentless movement of Julián Álvarez. The midfield trio of Enzo Fernández, Rodrigo De Paul and Alexis Mac Allister will attempt to dominate possession while providing support for the attack.

Both teams have required extra time during the knockout rounds, raising questions about fatigue as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.

The match also carries major implications in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.

Messi currently leads the scoring charts with eight goals and has once again underlined his enduring brilliance at the age of 39.

England captain Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham remain among the closest challengers, meaning another prolific display could reshape the race before Sunday’s final.

Spain booked their place in the World Cup final after a commanding 2-0 victory over France, extending their unbeaten run to 37 matches.

The winners in Atlanta will therefore earn the right to face the European champions in Sunday’s final, while the losers must settle for Saturday’s third-place playoff.

With decades of history, elite talent on both sides and the prize of a place in the World Cup final, England against Argentina promises to deliver another unforgettable chapter in one of football’s greatest rivalries.
