Ghana Receives 2,000 Metric Tonnes of Fertiliser from Morocco to Boost Food Security

Ghana has received a donation of 2,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser from the Kingdom of Morocco in a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and reinforcing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The consignment, delivered through Morocco’s state-owned OCP Group, was formally handed over at a brief ceremony attended by Ghanaian government officials, representatives of the Moroccan Embassy, development partners, and key players in the agriculture sector.

Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, who received the donation on behalf of the Government of Ghana, described the gesture as timely and impactful, particularly as the country intensifies efforts under its Feed Ghana Programme to scale up food production and improve smallholder farmer resilience.

“This donation is not just a consignment of fertiliser; it is a profound symbol of the strong and enduring relationship between our two nations,” Mr. Dumelo said.

He added that the support aligns with the government’s broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), which aims to boost food and nutrition security, generate decent jobs, and foster agro-industrial development.

Support for Smallholder Farmers

The Deputy Minister emphasised that access to quality fertiliser remains a critical input for smallholder farmers, especially as the government expands its distribution to key production zones across the country.

“This donation will go a long way in addressing the input needs of smallholder farmers, particularly at a time when government is scaling up distribution to priority production zones,” he noted.

The fertiliser is expected to support thousands of farmers engaged in the cultivation of staples such as maize, rice, soybeans, and vegetables — crops central to Ghana’s food security and import substitution strategy.

Strengthening Ghana-Morocco Cooperation

The gesture marks another milestone in the deepening relationship between Ghana and Morocco, with growing collaboration in key areas such as fertiliser development, seed commercialisation, irrigation, and agricultural knowledge exchange.

Officials say the partnership has already contributed to ongoing efforts to develop a resilient and sustainable food system that drives rural development and enhances national food security.

Mr. Dumelo assured stakeholders that the donated fertiliser would be distributed transparently and efficiently, targeting farmers operating in high-impact food production areas.

Looking Ahead

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Ghana and other dignitaries present at the event reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s agricultural development through technical cooperation and targeted investments.

In his concluding remarks, the Deputy Minister said:

“Together, we are sowing the seeds of transformation, and together, we will reap the fruits of food security, economic growth, and rural prosperity.”

The donation is expected to contribute meaningfully to the government’s agenda of building resilient food systems and promoting inclusive growth through agriculture.
