African Games: Benjamin Azamati struggles in 100m final as Ghana misses out on medal
Ghana failed to secure medals in both the men’s and women’s 100m finals during Tuesday’s races at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
Despite high expectations, neither the men nor the woman managed to reach the podium in their respective events.
The men’s 100m final featured two Ghanaian athletes: Benjamin Azamati, currently holding the Ghanaian 100m record with a time of 9.97 seconds, and Barnabas Aggerh, competing in his first-ever outdoor event. Unfortunately, neither athlete managed to claim a medal.
Azamati finished in fifth place with a time of 10.45 seconds, while Aggerh came in sixth with 10.50 seconds.
The disappointment among spectators was evident, particularly regarding Azamati, who had expressed confidence in securing a medal before the games.
However, his subpar performance may have resulted from the pain he experienced during the semi-final race due to a tight hip flexor. Weather conditions may have also contributed, as he mentioned on Monday.
Moving forward, Azamati must now refocus his efforts on leading the 4x100m relay team, aiming to defend their gold medal title won in Rabat during the 2019 edition of the African Games.
On the women’s side, Boakye Mary secured seventh place in her 100m final, which was ultimately won by Gambia’s Gina Mariam with a time of 11.36 seconds.
