  • Government Ends Free World Cup Ticket Scheme as Black Stars Prepare for Colombia Showdown

Ghanaian supporters hoping to cheer on the Black Stars in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will have to purchase their own match tickets after the Ministry of Sports and Recreation confirmed that the government’s ticket support initiative ended with the conclusion of the group stage.

The announcement comes as Ghana prepares for a highly anticipated Round of 32 clash against Colombia following an impressive group-stage campaign that saw the Black Stars secure qualification for the knockout rounds.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 29, the Ministry clarified that the government’s World Cup ticket programme was designed exclusively for Ghana’s three group-stage matches against Panama, England and Croatia and will not be extended to the remainder of the tournament.

“The Government of Ghana’s World Cup group-stage ticket support scheme has come to an end,” the Ministry stated, adding that there is currently no government-backed ticket arrangement for any subsequent stage of the competition.

As a result, supporters wishing to watch Ghana’s knockout encounter with Colombia will be required to obtain tickets independently through FIFA’s official ticketing platform or other authorised ticketing partners.

The ticket support programme was introduced to boost Ghanaian presence in the stadiums during the group stage and provide organised backing for the national team.

Under the initiative, the government secured a limited allocation of tickets for selected supporter groups, Ghanaian associations, sponsors, stakeholders and members of the Ghanaian diaspora living across the United States and Canada.

According to the Ministry, 948 tickets were allocated for Ghana’s opening Group L match against Panama, 1,000 tickets were made available for the blockbuster encounter with England, while another 974 tickets were secured for the Black Stars’ final group game against Croatia.

The Ministry explained that the tickets were never intended for commercial sale but formed part of a coordinated national support strategy aimed at ensuring strong Ghanaian representation at each of the team’s group-stage matches.

Distribution was carried out in collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the United States and Canada, recognised Ghanaian community organisations, supporter unions and other approved stakeholders.

Officials also acknowledged that the demand for tickets far exceeded the number available.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to supporters who showed interest in backing the Black Stars and apologised to fans who were unable to receive tickets because of the limited allocation.

The announcement follows Ghana’s successful qualification for the knockout stage after an encouraging Group L campaign.

The Black Stars opened their tournament with victory over Panama before earning a valuable draw against England. Although they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match, the results were enough to secure progression to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Attention now shifts to the crucial knockout encounter against Colombia, where Ghana will attempt to keep alive hopes of reaching the latter stages of the competition.

While government-sponsored tickets are no longer available, officials have encouraged supporters who plan to attend the match to purchase tickets only through FIFA’s official sales channels and authorised ticketing agencies to avoid fraud and ensure valid stadium access.
