Germany Seeks Revenge Against England in Potential Women’s Euro Final Rematch
Germany is setting its sights on a potential revenge match against England in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, with former international Melanie Leupolz expressing hopes for a rematch of the 2022 final. After suffering a heart-wrenching 2-1 extra-time defeat in that championship match, the German team is eager to rewrite history.
Before any showdown can occur, both teams must first overcome challenging semi-final opponents. England faces Italy on Tuesday, while Germany will take on reigning world champions and tournament favorites, Spain, a day later.
“It would be a good revenge; that would be amazing,” Leupolz said at an Adidas event in Zurich. “Fingers crossed they win against Spain and make it to the final.”
The quarter-finals saw dramatic performances, with England edging out Sweden in a tense penalty shootout, Italy scoring a last-minute winner against Norway, and Germany overcoming France on penalties to secure their semi-final spots.
“I won’t underestimate Italy; they are playing a good tournament with a lot of passion,” Leupolz warned. “It will be very difficult for England as well. They have had some ups and downs during the tournament, so they need to have a good day to win against Italy.”
Germany’s path to the semi-finals was fraught with challenges, including an early red card and a goal conceded against France. However, they managed to draw 1-1 after extra time and triumphed 6-5 in the ensuing penalty shootout.
Leupolz, who retired from professional play recently, shared her mixed feelings about stepping off the pitch. “I already miss the 90 minutes of football for sure,” she said. “But when I see games like yesterday, I will miss the highlight moments.”
