- GCB Bank Jumps 4.72% to Lead GSE Gainers in Thin Trading
Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange slowed sharply on Thursday, October 29, 2026, despite gains in GCB Bank, MTN Ghana and Societe Generale Ghana.
A total of 643,883 shares valued at GH¢2.04 million changed hands across the main market, the Ghana Alternative Market and the exchange-traded fund segment.
This represented a substantial decline from the previous session, when 6.88 million securities worth GH¢41.50 million were traded. Total market volume consequently fell by approximately 90.64%, while value traded declined by 95.08%.
The reduction indicates that the session’s price movements occurred against significantly weaker investor activity, following the heavy trading recorded during the previous session.
Ordinary shares accounted for 553,765 units valued at GH¢1.88 million. NewGold contributed 244 units worth GH¢112,815.84, while the Ghana Alternative Market recorded 90,118 shares valued at GH¢43,316.23.
Market breadth was negative, with five decliners against three advancers. Most listed equities ended unchanged.
GCB Bank emerged as the strongest performer after gaining GH¢1.97, or 4.72%, to close at GH¢43.67. The bank opened at GH¢41.70 and traded 4,632 shares valued at GH¢196,894.94.
The increase followed GCB’s strong performance in the preceding session, when it advanced by GH¢1.48 to GH¢41.70. The two consecutive gains have lifted the stock by GH¢3.45 from its October 27 closing level of GH¢40.22.
Despite the recent advance, GCB remained below its 2026 high of GH¢52.00 but well above its year-low price of GH¢20.11.
MTN Ghana also strengthened, rising by GH¢0.17, or 2.62%, from GH¢6.50 to GH¢6.67. The telecommunications stock traded 58,078 shares valued at GH¢387,278.62, making it the largest contributor to ordinary-share turnover by value.
MTN Ghana’s gain was important because the company remains one of the market’s most actively traded and heavily capitalised equities. Movements in the stock can therefore exert considerable influence on broader market direction.
Societe Generale Ghana completed the gainers’ list, appreciating by GH¢0.01, or 0.22%, to close at GH¢4.62. A total of 81,173 shares worth GH¢375,044.89 changed hands, making it the second-largest contributor to ordinary-share turnover.
Enterprise Group recorded the steepest percentage decline on the main market, losing GH¢0.20, or 2.35%, to close at GH¢8.30.
Republic Bank Ghana followed with a 2.20% decrease after falling by GH¢0.09 to GH¢4.00.
Guinness Ghana Breweries declined by GH¢0.03, or 0.28%, to GH¢10.66, while Clydestone Ghana slipped by GH¢0.01, or 0.26%, to GH¢3.85.
On the Ghana Alternative Market, Intravenous Infusions fell by GH¢0.01, or 1.79%, from GH¢0.56 to GH¢0.55. The company traded 46,942 shares valued at GH¢26,071.33.
CAL Bank led the market by volume, with 205,231 shares changing hands at an unchanged price of GH¢0.74. The transactions were valued at GH¢150,744.39.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated followed with 98,500 shares valued at GH¢142,516.73. The stock remained unchanged at GH¢1.45.
Ghana Oil Company recorded 40,154 shares worth GH¢220,847.00 at a closing price of GH¢5.50. It was the third-largest ordinary equity by traded value, behind MTN Ghana and Societe Generale Ghana.
Kasapreko traded 32,157 shares valued at GH¢58,797.71 and remained unchanged at GH¢1.83.
TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana closed flat at GH¢40.00 after 1,775 shares valued at GH¢71,000.00 were traded. The company’s unaudited nine-month financial statements released around the period showed pressure on revenue and profit, although its share price recorded no movement during the session.
ZEN Petroleum Holdings Plc also closed unchanged at GH¢9.01. The company traded 2,101 shares worth GH¢18,930.01. The closing price remained between its 2026 high of GH¢12.61 and low of GH¢5.00.
First Atlantic Bank recorded only 30 shares valued at GH¢252.00 and closed unchanged at GH¢8.40.
Other banking stocks, including Access Bank Ghana, Agricultural Development Bank, Ecobank Ghana and Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, ended the session without price changes.
NewGold remained unchanged at GH¢462.36 after recording 244 units valued at GH¢112,815.84. The exchange-traded fund accounted for approximately 5.53% of the total value traded during the session.
On the Ghana Alternative Market, Digicut Production and Advertising traded 42,726 shares worth GH¢17,090.40 and closed unchanged at GH¢0.40.
Hords Plc also remained unchanged at GH¢0.75 after 206 shares valued at GH¢154.50 changed hands. Samba Foods and Meridian Marshalls Holding Company recorded no trades.
Overall, Thursday’s session produced a mixed picture. Gains in GCB Bank and MTN Ghana provided support to the market, but decliners outnumbered advancers and aggregate trading activity fell substantially.
The decline in turnover suggests that investors adopted a more cautious posture after the previous session’s unusually high activity. With most stocks unchanged, the market’s near-term direction may depend on whether fresh corporate earnings, dividend expectations and institutional demand can draw investors back into active trading.
