Afrobarometer: 46% of Ghanaians believe “hung” Parliament is effective in scrutinizing Gov’t spending
Almost half of the Ghanaian population believe the eighth Parliament – which happens to be a “hung” Parliament – is effective in scrutinising government spending.
Some thirty-three percent (33%) of the population however, think otherwise asserting the “hung” Parliament has failed in properly monitoring and scrutinising government spending.
For a smaller section of the populace (19%), they feel the “hung” Parliament has made no difference in how the Parliament normally monitors and scrutinise public spending.
The above findings is per the recent survey undertaken by Afrobarometer to ascertain the level of impact the “hung” Parliament has had on governance particularly with regards to the passage of laws and scrutiny of government spending.
Despite being split on the effectiveness of the “hung” Parliament in scrutinising government spending, an overwhelming majority of the Ghanaian populace (82%) want the Parliament to ensure that the President to explain how it’s government spends taxpayer’s monies.
This view expressed by the majority of the public is based on the perception that government misuses taxes accrued to it.
