5,700 MTN Ghana Customers Affected in Cybersecurity Breach of Telecom Giant

The MTN Group in a statement, has disclosed that approximately 5,700 MTN Ghana customers have been affected by a recent cybersecurity breach involving unauthorised access to personal information.

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) since the cybersecurity breach, has launched an investigation into the incident, seeking to ascertain the extent of the breach and its potential ramifications on customer data security.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 28, the MTN Group assured the public that it is working closely with leading cybersecurity experts and conducting a comprehensive forensic investigation in accordance with established security protocols. The telecom giant also indicated that all affected customers would be contacted directly.

“The privacy of information is our top priority, and we remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and stakeholders. We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully,” the company pledged.

MTN Group further emphasised that the investigation remains ongoing and that it is deploying all necessary resources to ensure a swift resolution to the matter.

  • Keeping MTN, Mobile Money (MoMo) and banking apps updated;

  • Using strong and unique passwords, and changing them regularly;

  • Exercising caution with unexpected messages and refraining from clicking on suspicious links;

  • Avoiding the disclosure of sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, and one-time passwords (OTPs) over phone, text, or email.

The incident adds to growing concerns over data privacy and cybersecurity in Ghana’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem, highlighting the need for enhanced vigilance across the telecommunications and financial sectors.
