Transport Fares to Increase by 15% Effective Today

The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, citing the “continuous rise in fuel prices” as the primary reason for the adjustment.

The new fares take effect today, December 5, 2024, according to a statement released by the association on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

“This decision has become necessary as we face increasing operational costs, making it unsustainable to maintain current fare levels,” the statement noted.

The association appealed for public understanding during what it described as a challenging period for the transport sector, emphasizing that the adjustment was crucial to maintaining operational viability and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery.

The statement also urged drivers not to yield to intimidation or external pressure to prevent the implementation of the fare increment. It referenced past instances where leaders of transport organizations had been influenced by government officials to reverse similar adjustments, asserting that the association remains resolute this time.

“We urge all Ghanaians to support this adjustment and appreciate the need for a sustainable transport system amidst the prevailing economic conditions,” the association added.

In a call for national unity, the statement encouraged citizens to participate peacefully in the upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024.

“Let us work together to uphold peace and unity in our beloved nation,” it concluded.
