GFA proposes 900% increment for nomination fee of presidential candidates

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have suggested to effect a mega increase of 900% of the initial nomination fee for presidential aspirants ahead of the upcoming Congress which is expected to pave the way for elections.

If the idea is approved by Congress, presidential hopefuls of the GFA elections may be obligated to shell out GHC50,000 each, as opposed to the initial GHC 5,000 nomination fee.

This was revealed in a recent statement signed by General Secretary of the GFA Prosper Harrison Addo on June 24th, suggesting a significant increase in the nomination fee for Presidential contenders.

Ghana’s football governing body explains the planned fee increase by citing the rising costs of organising elections, such as logistics, transportation, and accommodation.

If approved at Congress, the new development may have financial implications on former Vice President George Afriyie, Kojo Yankah, and Bernard Amofa Jantuah who have all declared to contest Kurt Okraku in the upcoming elections as his first term nears its end.

While Female Aspirants are expected to pay 50% of the fee, other nomination fee proposals include aspirants to the Executive Council and Regional Football Associations (RFA) Chairmen to pay GHC15,000 and GHC10,000, up from GHC2,500 four years ago.

Aspirants for the RFA slot for Executive Council, RFA Executive Council, District Chairmen, and District Executive Council may also be charged GHC5,000, GHC2,000, GHC1,000, and GHC500.

The proposal is expected to be either accepted or rejected at the upcoming Congress which comes off on Monday, July 10, 2023, at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
