  • 2026 FIFA World Cup: Messi Leads Thrilling Golden Boot Race as Superstars Battle for Scoring Glory

The race for the Golden Boot at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is rapidly becoming one of the most captivating storylines of the tournament, with some of football’s biggest names locked in a fierce battle to finish as the competition’s top scorer.

After the opening rounds of matches, Argentine legend Lionel Messi has surged to the top of the scoring charts with five goals from just two appearances. His latest brace inspired defending champions Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Austria and further cemented his status as one of the tournament’s standout performers.

Hot on Messi’s heels are three of world football’s most feared attackers. France captain Kylian Mbappé, Norway striker Erling Haaland and Brazil winger Vinícius Júnior have each netted four goals, keeping the pressure firmly on the Argentine superstar.

All three produced match-winning displays in their respective group matches, underlining why many observers believe the 2026 edition could produce one of the closest Golden Boot contests in World Cup history.

While the spotlight has largely focused on that elite quartet, England captain Harry Kane remains a serious contender despite failing to score in England’s goalless draw against Ghana. Kane, who won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, struck twice against Croatia earlier in the tournament and remains well-positioned to challenge for the award.

The Bayern Munich striker endured a frustrating evening against the Black Stars, missing a late opportunity that could have added to his tally. Nevertheless, his experience and proven goalscoring pedigree make him impossible to ignore.

Several other attacking stars are also beginning to make their mark. Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opened his World Cup account against Saudi Arabia, while Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo announced his arrival in spectacular fashion with a brace against Uzbekistan.

Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal has also enjoyed an impressive start, scoring twice during his side’s emphatic victory over Saudi Arabia. Germany’s Deniz Undav has emerged as a surprise package with three goals, while the Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo continues to showcase his reputation as a reliable scorer on the international stage.

Brazil’s Matheus Cunha, Morocco’s Ismael Saibari and Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi have each scored three times and remain firmly in the conversation as the tournament heads toward the knockout rounds.

Host nations Canada and the United States also boast potential challengers. Canada’s Jonathan David has already struck three goals, including a memorable hat-trick against Qatar, while USA forward Folarin Balogun has scored twice and could benefit from a deep run by Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Beyond the Golden Boot race, the tournament has already witnessed a series of remarkable records. Messi has extended his lead as the player with the most World Cup appearances and victories, while Ronaldo has become the first footballer to score in six different World Cups. The Portuguese star now shares the record for most World Cup tournaments played with Messi, both having appeared in six editions.

Messi has also strengthened his position atop the all-time World Cup scoring charts, moving to 18 career goals and pulling clear of German legend Miroslav Klose. Mbappé has already drawn level with Klose’s tally of 16 goals despite still being in the prime of his career.

Meanwhile, Haaland has become Norway’s leading scorer in World Cup history after only two matches at the tournament, while Kane is closing in on the World Cup scoring record for England.

As the competition intensifies, another historic target looms. The long-standing record for most goals scored in a single World Cup remains the 13 netted by Just Fontaine in 1958. Only Fontaine, Gerd Müller and Sándor Kocsis have ever reached double figures in a single tournament.

Given the remarkable scoring rate seen so far in 2026, that exclusive club could soon welcome new members.

For now, however, the race belongs to Messi, Mbappé, Haaland and Vinícius Júnior. With the knockout stages approaching and goals flowing freely, football fans around the world are witnessing a Golden Boot battle that could become one of the greatest in World Cup history.
