Gov’t halts electricity exports to prioritise domestic energy amid ‘Dumsor’ crisis
In a bid to address the persistent power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’, President Akufo-Addo is reported to have issued a directive demanding a reduction in electricity exports to neighbouring nations.
The directive according to the Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, Samuel Atta Akyea, highlights the President’s prioritisation of meeting domestic energy demands over the potential revenue from electricity exports.
“The President is keenly attuned to our national requirements rather than pursuing profits overseas,” he remarked in an interview with Accra-based media outlet JoyNews.
The MP for Akim Abuakwa South emphasised the urgency of redirecting electricity destined for export back into Ghana’s national grid to mitigate the ongoing power crisis.
Ghana’s recent electricity supply challenges have caused disruptions across various sectors and inconveniences for the populace.
Currently, Ghana exports electricity to neighbouring countries such as Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso.
The decision to reduce these exports signals the government’s proactive stance to alleviate the adverse effects of the power crisis on the national economy and its citizens.
Mr Atta Akyea indicated that the directive would be swiftly implemented, with immediate actions planned to re-route exported electricity to the national grid.
“We cannot sacrifice our national economy for foreign profits. The electricity meant for export will now be channeled to meet our domestic needs,” he asserted.
