Springfield Secures Deepsea Rig for Afina-1x Well Appraisal in Unitisation Push

Springfield Exploration and Production (E&P) has reached an agreement with Northern Ocean Limited (NOL) to secure the Deepsea Bollsta rig for the appraisal of the Afina-1x well, located in Ghana’s offshore West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP-2).

The move is part of a broader strategy aimed at finalising the unitisation of the Afina and Sankofa oil fields, in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC Explorco.

The unitisation process, which integrates the two fields into a single operation, is anticipated to unlock significant value for both the Ghanaian government and private stakeholders. Springfield’s appraisal campaign, expected to commence in October, will mark a key step towards achieving this goal.

Kevin Okyere, CEO of Springfield, hailed the development as a “milestone moment” for the company, which is positioning itself to become the first independent African oil producer operating in deepwater.

“This is a testament to our commitment to realise Ghana’s full potential in oil production,” Mr Okyere remarked, adding that Springfield’s tenacity in overcoming hurdles in the unitisation process could serve as a beacon for African entrepreneurs.

The project follows an international arbitration ruling urging Springfield to advance the unitisation of the Afina-Sankofa fields. The company responded by quickly securing the necessary rig and technical expertise, ensuring the project remains on track.

NOL CEO Arne Jacobsen voiced optimism about the collaboration, noting the potential for a sustained partnership between the two companies. Mr Jacobsen praised the operational capabilities of Northern Ocean, emphasising the synergy between the two firms as they embark on the offshore drilling campaign.

The success of this initiative would not only cement Springfield’s status as a rising force in Ghana’s energy sector but could also bolster the country’s stature within the global oil and gas industry.
