Top 10 African Countries With The Highest Daily Oil Consumption In 2025

While Africa is home to some of the world’s largest oil producers, the continent’s crude oil consumption patterns vary widely.

For instance, countries like Nigeria, Angola, Libya, and Algeria have become major players in the oil industry, shipping out millions of barrels each year. The money from these oil exports plays a massive role in developing their economies.

Crude oil consumption in Africa is mainly focused on a few big economies, with Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria leading the pack.

These countries have large industries, growing cities, and busy transportation sectors that drive the oil demand. According to Global Firepower, Egypt uses the most oil on the continent, with 851,000 barrels per day, ranking 26th in the world.

South Africa comes in second, consuming 601,000 barrels per day, ranked 30th globally. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, ranks third with 515,000 barrels per day, sitting at 32nd place globally.

Below are the top 10 African countries with the highest daily crude oil consumption in 2025:

RankCountryOil consumptionGlobal rank
1Egypt851,000 Mbbl/d26th
2South Africa601,000 Mbbl/d30th
3Nigeria515,000 Mbbl/d32nd
4Algeria428,000 Mbbl/d36th
5Morocco318,000 Mbbl/d41st

8Sudan127,000 Mbbl/d73rd
9Kenya119,000 Mbbl/d75th
10Ethiopia110,000 Mbbl/d77th

While crude oil consumption in Africa may still be high, especially in countries with large energy demands and reliance on the petroleum sector, the continent is actively exploring renewable sources of energy.

The transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources is gaining momentum as African nations recognize the need to reduce their dependency on fossil fuels and address climate change.
