63.6% of labour force ‘vulnerably employed’ – GSS
About 63.6% of the country’s labour force are engaged in what the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) terms as “vulnerable employment” as at the third quarter of 2022 per its Q3 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) Labour Statistics Report.
The proportion of the labour vulnerably employed (63.6%) as noted by the GSS is however a decline from the vulnerable employment rate of 67.6% and 66.8% rate recorded in the second and first quarters of 2022.
Of the 63.6% vulnerable employment rate recorded in Q3 2022, 73.9% were females with 51.9% being males.
The GSS defines vulnerable employment as “employment on own account (self-employed without employees) or contributing family workers.”
According to the GSS, the total number of the country’s labour force employed as at Q3 2022 is 11.09m, an increase from the previous quarter’s (Q2 2022) figure of 10.66m.
There are however, some 1.76m of the labour force population that are unemployed though they are available for work.
Per the report, the country’s unemployment rate as at Q3 2022 stood at 13.7%, a marginal decline of 0.2% when compared to the unemployment rate of 13.9% in Q2 2022.
