Ghana’s Independent Tax Appeals Board set to commence work in Q1 2024

In a significant stride towards bolstering Ghana’s fiscal landscape, the Independent Tax Appeals Board is poised to commence operations by the first quarter of 2024, as confirmed by Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu Amoah, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority.

Established a year ago, the board’s core mandate revolves around adjudicating litigation concerning tax payments and settlement processes, signaling a pivotal development in the country’s tax governance structure.

Rev. Dr. Amoah, in an interview, expressed unwavering confidence in the board’s capability to expedite tax-related matters, ensuring a seamless resolution process. He revealed that the necessary documentation and recommendations from the Attorney General’s office had been meticulously received, paving the way for the imminent launch of the board’s operations.

“The Independent Tax Board, as you know, has been inaugurated, and all documentation is in place to get it working. The office has been set up already in Accra. We have received some papers from the Attorney General’s office and other relevant stakeholders, so very soon work will start,” affirmed Rev. Dr. Amoah.

Anticipating an expeditious commencement, he disclosed that the board had already received pertinent reports, expressing optimism that they would be addressed promptly, with operations expected to kick off before the conclusion of the first quarter in 2024.

Meanwhile, at the inaugural ceremony of the eleven-member Tax Appeals Board, the Minister of Finance emphasized the pivotal role the board would play in crafting a robust tax dispute resolution system. This system, the Minister stressed, is crucial for supporting Ghana’s ambitious revenue mobilization drive and contributing to the nation’s overarching developmental aspirations.
