BoG’s Director of Fintech and Innovation, Kwame Oppong, Exits Central Bank After Spearheading Major Fintech Reforms

The Director of Fintech and Innovation at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Kwame Oppong, has announced his exit from the Central Bank after years of spearheading major reforms that positioned Ghana as a continental leader in financial technology innovation.

In a post on his LinkedIn page, Mr Oppong expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues, partners, and the fintech ecosystem for what he described as an “incredibly rewarding journey” at the Central Bank.

“After an incredibly rewarding journey, I am concluding my chapter at the Bank of Ghana, where I’ve had the privilege of setting up the Fintech and Innovation Office and serving as the Director of Fintech and Innovation,” he stated.

Reflecting on his tenure, Mr Oppong highlighted several milestones achieved under his leadership, including the eCedi Pilot Project, the establishment of a Regulatory Sandbox, and the development of a Supervisory Intelligence Platform that digitised prudential reporting with geospatial enhancements.

He also cited the exploration of licence passporting and cross-border mobile money interoperability with Rwanda, as well as the creation of Akushika, the BoG’s AI-powered chatbot for information and complaint management.

Other key achievements included the introduction of regulatory Guidelines on remittances, dormant accounts, crowdfunding, merchant accounts, card processing localisation, and corporate governance, which collectively enhanced trust and resilience within Ghana’s digital financial space.

During his tenure, Mr Oppong also played a pivotal role in hosting international engagements such as the DC FinTech Week 2024 Leaders Dinner and the 3i Africa Summit 2024, which attracted nearly 8,000 investors, innovators, policymakers, and industry players from 81 countries — cementing Ghana’s status as a leading African fintech investment hub.

He further noted that one of the proudest moments of his leadership was when Ghana was ranked number one globally by GSMA for its mobile money regulatory environment.

“I’m deeply grateful to my colleagues at the Bank, our partners across the financial and technology sectors, and the broader community of innovators who’ve made this journey so inspiring,” he added.

Mr Oppong, however, did not disclose his next line of professional engagement but hinted that his commitment to advancing innovation, inclusion, and responsible growth in financial technology “remains as strong as ever.”
