GPMON Applauds Speaker Bagbin’s Swift Action on Vetting Misconduct, Calls for Strict Sanctions
The Ghana Parliamentary Monitoring Organizations Network (GPMON) has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his swift intervention following the misconduct displayed during the vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
In a statement, GPMON lauded the Speaker’s decisive move to launch an investigation and ensure accountability, describing it as a crucial step in upholding parliamentary integrity.
“Such actions will help restore discipline and ensure that parliamentary proceedings are conducted with the decorum expected of elected representatives,” the statement read.
The Network also acknowledged Speaker Bagbin’s commitment to enforcing Parliament’s Standing Orders, emphasizing that strict adherence to these rules is essential in reversing the growing decline in parliamentary discipline, rebuilding public trust in democracy, and safeguarding the legislature’s reputation.
GPMON further expressed keen interest in the outcome of the investigation and pledged to monitor the work of the seven-member committee tasked with probing the matter. The Network also indicated its intention to follow up on directives given to the Clerk to Parliament and the ongoing Police investigations.
To serve as a deterrent, GPMON recommended imposing severe sanctions on those found culpable, including financial surcharges to cover damages caused.
The Network reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a strong and accountable Parliament to ensure Members of Parliament (MPs) function effectively in advancing democratic governance.
The statement was jointly signed by 16 civil society organizations, including Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica), Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), Ghana Integrity Initiative, and CDD-Ghana, among others.
