Yuki Tsunoda to Replace Liam Lawson at Red Bull for Japanese Grand Prix

In a significant shake-up within the Red Bull Racing team, Yuki Tsunoda has been announced as the replacement for Liam Lawson, effective from the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix.

This decision follows a challenging start to the season for Lawson, who struggled in the first two races in Australia and China.

Tsunoda, 24, will step into the senior Red Bull Racing squad after Lawson’s disappointing performances in which he crashed out in Australia and finished 15th in Shanghai.

Lawson’s aggregate performance did not meet the expectations set for the team, leading to mounting speculation about his position. With Lawson now returning to the sister team, Racing Bulls, he will partner with rookie Isack Hadjar.

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner stated, “It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 at the first two races. After careful consideration, we collectively decided to make an early switch.

We entered the 2025 season with the ambition to retain the World Drivers’ Championship and reclaim the World Constructors’ title, making this a purely sporting decision.”

Tsunoda’s promotion comes after he demonstrated significant growth as a driver, having outscored former teammates including Nyck de Vries and Daniel Ricciardo.

His successful performances last season earned him a reputation as a skilled competitor, and he is now poised to partner with reigning champion Max Verstappen.

Horner acknowledged Tsunoda’s experience as a vital asset for the team’s development, stating, “Yuki’s experience will prove highly beneficial in helping to develop the current car.” Tsunoda, who debuted with AlphaTauri in 2021, expressed understanding of the team’s decision regarding Lawson and is eager to seize this opportunity.

Meanwhile, Lawson will look to regroup at Racing Bulls, an environment he knows well, aiming to regain his form and continue his development as an F1 driver.

Racing Bulls Team Principal Laurent Mekies praised Tsunoda’s progress and expressed excitement about his well-deserved move to Red Bull.

As the F1 season continues, all eyes will be on Tsunoda as he takes on this new challenge at his home Grand Prix in Suzuka, while Lawson aims to shine in a supportive environment back at Racing Bulls.
