Kurt Okraku Urges Government to Establish Support Fund for Ghanaian Clubs in African Competitions

During the Ghana Football Association’s 31st Ordinary Congress held today, President Kurt Okraku made a compelling appeal to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to create a national support fund for Ghanaian clubs competing in CAF-organized tournaments.

Okraku emphasized the financial challenges faced by clubs representing Ghana in prestigious competitions like the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup. Historically, these clubs have relied on their own resources to fund their participation, which places a substantial burden on their operations.

“We call on the government to establish a dedicated national support fund for clubs representing Ghana in CAF-organized competitions,” Okraku stated. “These clubs carry the national flag and indeed need logistical, financial, and institutional support to succeed on the African continent.”

This season, Bibiani GoldStars and Asante Kotoko will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, respectively, after their triumphs in the Ghana Premier League and the MTN FA Cup. Additionally, Police Ladies will compete in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers, having won the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League.

Okraku’s call for governmental support comes at a crucial time as the clubs gear up for their continental challenges, aiming to enhance Ghana’s reputation in African football. With the backing of a national support fund, these teams could alleviate financial pressures and focus on performing at their best on the international stage.
