Ghanaian sings for 126 hours 52 minutes in attempt to break Guinness World Record
Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum, the Ghanaian who attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon has brought her singing to an end after 126 hours and 52 minutes.
Asantewaa called time on her effort on the advice of her team led by Dr. Grace Buckman, who advised she quit on account of fatigue.
Her attempt is yet to be verified by Guinness World Record judges.
The record is currently held by Sunil Waghmare of India. He achieved the feat in Nagpur from 3 to 7 March 2012, featuring a diverse selection of popular Indian songs with no repetition within four hours. The marathon concluded on the evening of 7 March, with Waghmare engaging in a sing-along session with his supporters.
Speaking to the crowd after bringing her singing to an end, Aduonum said her attempt should serve as a motivation for Ghanaians especially women to come out of their comfort zone and achieve their goals.
“At a point, I kept asking which day it was, and I finally got to know that today is Friday, so on behalf of my husband, family, team, volumeters, media, and the Ghana Tourism Authority, I would like to say a very big thank you to each and everyone who participated in this sing-a-thon attempt.
“This was a mere dream that was visualized in a period of 5 days, I say just because dont even remember how it started, not to talk of how it ended. It has been a smooth journey, a very successful one.”
“And we hope and believe this will be an inspiration to all women and youth and individuals to come out of their comfort zones and try new opportunities. there is a lot out there to do, you can do a lot of stuff if you put your mind to it you can achieve it,” She said.
She further expressed gratitude to the musicians who passed through, the Vice President, and all other dignitaries who came to support her.
The singathon began on Sunday (24 December) at exactly midnight and ended on the morning of Friday (29 December) 2023.
Aduonum, the mother of three, opened the marathon with the iconic Osibisa track ‘Woyaya’ and continued with a medley of seasonal Ghanaian gospel hits from artists such as Tagoe Sisters, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Yaw Sarpong, and Esther Smith.
Switching from the gospel scene, Afua Asantewaa transitions to secular tunes by the likes of Shatta Wale, Ebony Reigns, Wendy Shay, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Adina, Samini, Sarkodie, and Black Sherif among others.
The event took place at the Akwaaba Village in Accra with the support of the Ghana Tourism Authority.
