Finance Ministry announces appointment of Julie Essiam as the new Commissioner-General of GRA

The Finance Ministry has announced the appointment of Ms. Julie Essiam as the new Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). Ms. Essiam makes history as the first woman to hold this prestigious position, succeeding Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, who was relieved of his duties on March 27.

With an illustrious career spanning several decades, Ms. Essiam brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. She has previously served in prominent positions such as Group Executive of Ecobank Transnational Inc., Director of Citibank Group, and Vice President of Chase Manhattan Bank. Her professional journey has been marked by a strong commitment to community development, talent transformation, and innovative leadership.

During her tenure as Commissioner for the Support Services Division of the GRA, Ms. Essiam spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at boosting revenue generation and operational efficiency. Her innovative digital transformation strategies have significantly streamlined the GRA’s operational processes, leading to enhanced efficiency in revenue collection.

Ms. Essiam’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the GRA, as the organization undergoes a period of transition and transformation. With her proven track record of driving positive change, she is expected to provide stability and leadership, ensuring continuity and progress in the GRA’s mandate.

Her appointment is also seen as aligning with the priorities of the new Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam. In a recent meeting with GRA leadership and the Tema Customs Division, Dr. Adam emphasized the need to enhance domestic revenue mobilization, counter smuggling activities, and streamline the GRA’s operations.

Described as warm, personable, and down-to-earth by GRA staff, Ms. Essiam’s management style has endeared her to colleagues at all levels of the organization. Her genuine concern for employee well-being and inclusive approach is expected to address longstanding issues of promotion and staff welfare with renewed urgency.
