President Mahama Directs Swift Distribution of Food Supplies to Senior High Schools Amid Food Shortages
President John Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the government is taking decisive action to address reported food shortages in senior high schools nationwide.
Speaking at a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, the President announced measures to utilize food reserves at the Tema port to alleviate the crisis.
The reserves, procured by the previous administration in response to last year’s drought, are set to be reallocated to schools facing shortages.
“This food was imported by the outgone government in response to the drought that occurred last year, but in this emergency, we need to use some of that food to feed our students so that education can continue,” President Mahama stated.
He revealed that he has directed his Chief of Staff to coordinate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the immediate evacuation and distribution of food supplies.
“I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate foods that are currently held in warehouses in Tema,” he added.
This intervention aligns with Mahama’s broader commitment to supporting the Free Senior High School policy initiated by the previous administration. The initiative aims to mitigate disruptions in the education system caused by logistical and funding challenges.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) recently called on parents to support schools amid feeding challenges, citing delays in government funding as a key issue. President Mahama’s swift response seeks to reassure stakeholders and maintain stability within the education sector.
The reallocation of food reserves from Tema is expected to ease pressure on schools, ensuring continuity in students’ academic activities while addressing concerns from school heads and parents alike.
