Augustine Eguavoen steps down as Nigeria’s head coach
Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down as head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria following his side’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Eguavoen, 55, was appointed on an interim basis in December 2021 to guide Nigeria to AFCON success and to secure World Cup qualification but failed to achieve any of the two targets.
Many fans and stakeholders have been calling for his head after Ghana qualified on the away goal rule following a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Tuesday.

Eguavoen had been talking tough ahead of the return fixture against the Black Stars but fortunes changed as Ghana pipped Nigeria to secure one of Africa’s five slots at the World Cup in Qatar.
He has now resigned from his role after the massive backlash and will return to his role as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation.
