Ghana to Welcome King’s Baton Relay on August 8 Ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games
Ghana is poised to host the prestigious King’s Baton Relay on August 8, 2025, as part of its preparations for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This symbolic event aims to promote unity, friendly competition, and environmental sustainability among the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
This year’s relay introduces a unique twist, allowing each participating country to decorate and customize a baton, showcasing its rich cultural heritage. Ghana’s involvement in the relay highlights the nation’s commitment to sports, cultural pride, and environmental awareness, particularly in efforts to combat plastic pollution in marine environments.
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has organized a series of commemorative activities that will take place on August 8, 9, and 12. These events include plastic clean-up campaigns, cultural celebrations, community engagements, and courtesy calls on traditional leaders and dignitaries. Among the notable figures expected to participate is President John Dramani Mahama.
Richard Akpokavie, President of Commonwealth Sports-Ghana, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We are excited to participate in the King’s Baton Relay and contribute to the global effort in reducing plastic pollution and instilling Commonwealth values in Ghanaian youth and athletes.”
