GOC Suspends King’s Baton Relay in Response to Tragic Helicopter Crash Claiming Eight Lives, Including Two Ministers

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has announced the temporary suspension of the King’s Baton Relay following a tragic helicopter crash near Obuasi that resulted in the deaths of eight prominent Ghanaian statesmen. The devastating incident occurred on August 6, claiming the lives of notable figures, including two serving government ministers, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the GOC expressed profound sorrow over the incident, referring to the current time as one of national mourning. “The nation is in mourning and keening, and we have decided to put on hold the relay activities until further notice,” the statement read.

The GOC extended its condolences to the families of the bereaved and the government, assuring the public that updates regarding the relay’s resumption would be communicated by the end of the day.

“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all parties involved and look forward to resuming the relay when circumstances permit,” the GOC concluded.

The King’s Baton Relay is a significant event leading up to the Commonwealth Games, symbolizing unity among Commonwealth nations. As the country grapples with this loss, the GOC’s decision underscores the importance of honoring the memory of those who have passed.
